Every Indian recruiter has the same argument with their finance team once a year. The Naukri renewal quote arrives, someone asks whether it is worth it, and nobody has a clean answer because the honest answer is "for some roles yes, for others we are paying to miss people." Here is the version of that conversation with the reasoning laid out.
What Naukri is genuinely unbeatable at
Depth of active Indian job seekers. If you are hiring twelve support associates in Noida, or twenty mid-level Java developers with a four-week start, Naukri is the most efficient channel in the country and nothing on this page changes that. The candidates are looking, contactable, salary-aware and used to the process. Volume hiring in India runs on Naukri for good reasons.
It also produces speed. An active candidate replies in hours, not weeks, because they want the conversation. That responsiveness is the real product, more than the raw database size.
The structural gap: visibility bias
Job board databases have a selection effect baked in. People appear because they decided to be visible to recruiters, and they decide that when they want to move. This is fine until you hire senior. The engineering manager you want has been at a good company for three years, is well paid, is not unhappy enough to update a job portal profile, and will move only for a specific better opportunity put in front of her.
She is invisible to a job board and perfectly visible to a professional network index. That is the whole distinction between a job board and a sourcing tool. It is not that one has more people, it is that they contain systematically different people.
The test that settles the renewal argument
Pull last year's placements and tag each one by where the candidate actually originated. Not where you eventually tracked them, where they came from. Then split by seniority. Most Indian desks find a clean pattern: junior and mid roles are dominated by the job board, and senior roles came from referrals, direct outreach or an agency, with the expensive database contributing almost nothing above a certain level. That table is your budget argument, in either direction, and it takes an afternoon.
What passive sourcing actually requires
Swapping a job board for a sourcing tool is not a like-for-like substitution, because the workflow is different. With a job board, candidates want to talk to you. With passive sourcing, you have to earn the reply. Three things determine whether that works.
- Reachability. A profile you cannot contact is a screenshot. You need verified personal or work email and phone, and in India phone matters more than most global tools assume.
- A real reason to reply. Passive candidates ignore job descriptions. They respond to messages that reference their actual work and name the specific thing that would be better. Our outreach guide covers the patterns that work.
- Timing and joinability. Someone three months into a new role is a waste of a message. Someone on a 90 day notice cannot solve your urgent requisition. Knowing openness and notice period before you write changes your hit rate more than any subject line.
The pricing shape is different too
Job board database access is sold as an annual licence with seat and view limits, so you pay the same whether you hire two people or twenty. AI sourcing is typically usage-priced: TalentGPT charges by profiles evaluated, with Starter at Rs 2,499 a month ex-GST for 4,000 evaluations and Growth at Rs 9,999 for 11,000. For a desk with lumpy demand, that matters more than the headline number, because the quiet quarter costs less instead of the same.
The recommendation most honest recruiters land on
Do not frame it as Naukri or an alternative. Frame it by role type. Keep a job board plan sized for your genuine volume hiring, which is probably smaller than your current one. Run passive sourcing for every senior, specialist and leadership role, where the job board was never going to produce the candidate anyway. Most teams that do this end up spending about the same and filling the hard roles faster, which is the only metric that was ever in question.
